Zero-Waste Journey
Originally started at the Altadena Farmers Market in 2019
The journey to a zero-waste market is a marathon, not a sprint. We were building community and having fun along the way prior to pandemic. After Eaton Fire hit our community, We have committed to create a sustainability hub in Altadena with Altadena Farmers Market for our community's short-term and long-term recovery while we encourage other community to do the same!

Priceless Produce Bags

~ Introducing our priceless produce bags ~

Green Circle SGV and the awesome volunteers rescue second hand fabric including pillow cases, sheets, y-shirts, etc.
Often our local Buy Nothing groups are the main source of fabric, sewing crews, sewing machines, tools and many more supplies.

Every produce bag is slightly different size and pattern.
Currently we are gifting them to the Eaton Fire survivors at Altadena Farmers Market produce distribution.

We hope you bring reusable bags to the market but if you forget, we've got your back!
-
Grab a FREE reusable bag at the market and use it for all your shopping needs. Take it home and use it every time you shop.
-
Get a lightly used paper or plastic bag from a vendor.
-
Last resort: purchase a new plastic bag for 25 cents - a little nudge to encourage you to bring your own.

We provide reusable plates, utensils, and cups to food vendors to help wean the market off single-use items. When you order food, be sure to ask the vendor to serve it on Green Circle reusables. Food tastes so much better with reusables!

Community Reusables

A great team of volunteers was washing dishes prior to pandemic (free of charge to the community - how cool was that?!).

Now we are transitioning our operation to the commercial grade!

Waste Audit

Separating waste into different bins illustrates how much waste our community is producing - and who the biggest offenders are.
At the end of the night, we do an audit. Waste speaks for itself! A waste audit also gives us measurable data to track progress on the zero-waste journey.
